December the 16th 1847Dear Sir
We take the Liberty of adressing you this few Lines and herein Enclosed Two Petitions
asking of the Post Master General to Grant or Cause to be Carried From Pittsburgh
to Franklin Pa a Daily Mail by the Way of Evansburgh Prospect Harisville &c
We (here and all long this road from where it leaves the old Mercer Road 13 miles
from Pittsbugh up to where it Crosses the Pittsburgh & Erie Turn Pike a whole distance
of Thirty Miles) labouring under a great desadvantage for want of a mail, we have
here in this Place four Stores and a number of other Branches of Business Carried
on, below we have at Whites Town a Couple of Stores Tavern, Tannery &c, Still further
down at Evansburgh a Couple of Stores, foundry Tannery, Taverns &c; Above and Below
the Country is thick Setled and the Road which is the old Franklin Road and the most
direct from Pittsburgh to the former Place, Runs the whole way through the best part
of the Country and have the mail all long the distance above mentioned but once a
week and by the way of Butler, So that writing a letter to Pittsburgh we can not get
an answer shorter than a week a distance of only 33 miles, as much and more time than
is required in Pittsburgh to write and get an answer from Philadelphia.
We have been running a Daily Line of Stages from Pittsburgh to Franklin in Connecting with the Warren Stage, and as is already Stated in the Petition the great
number of Travelers
<Page 2>
that are Carried up and down this road would enable us or any other Persons to Carry
it for about the Same as is required now to Convey it Three Times a week.
you would Confer a Great favour to this Comunity by attending to this matter and Give
us an answer as Soon as Convenient, there has been number of the Same Kind of Petitions
