To the Honorable Cave Johnson Post Master General of the United States of America
We the undersigned inhabitants of the town of Collikoon and towns adjoining in the county of Sullivan and State of New York do to your Honorable Department respectfully represent that the town of Collikoon in this County was erected in the year 1842 since which time with but few artificial facilities it has rapidly increased in business wealth and population until it has become a town of much commercial importance to our county and that with its increasing improvements among which may be mentioned the construction of The New York and Erie Rail road which passes along its western borders it cannot but in the opinion of the undersigned at no distant day become one of the most populous and Enterprising town in our County; Still it is not without its disadvantages the greatest of which is the want of mail routs and post Offices, there being at present no post office in, or mail routes passing through said town and the nearest post office to the interior or central part of the town is the Fosterdale post office which is nine miles distant
The undersigned therefore respectfully petition your Honorable Department to create a mail rout running from the Fosterdale P. O. north, through the said town to the Rockland post office a distance of about seventeen miles with necessary Offices on the route
And the undersigned would respectfully suggest that one post office on said route be at the Dutch Village a distance of five miles from the Fosterdale post office and that another office on said route be established at Collikoon Village nine miles distant from the said Fosterdale post office and in the central part of the said town of Collikoon And that another Office be established at Round pond settlement a distance of four miles from the Rockland P. O. And that the mail be carried on horseback over the said route and return once a week
And your Petitioners will ever pray
