Feb 15, 1848Hon Job MannDr Sir,
Enclosed is a petition for a post road from Hollidaysburg Blain Co. to Cherry Tree
Indiana Co. the latter being on a mail rout from Indiana to Clearfield. The proposed
rout is a State road, much travelled, and passing through a well settled part of Cambria
Co. rapidly improving and abounding with iron ore & coal while farming & lumbering
are both successfully carried on. Yet the greater part of the citizens [have?] from 6 to 12 miles to a post office. The distances and points where post offices
would be required would be as follows: From Hollidaysburg to Allegheny furnace 4 miles—thence
to Ashland furnace on Clearfield creek 10 miles—thence to Harts Sleeping place (Weaklands)
10 miles—thence to Cherry tree 8 miles—making 32 miles the lingth of the rout. The
petitioners Dear Sir request me to say to you that they will be under particular obligations
for your kind attention to this petition and endeavoring to have the proposed post
road granted
Please advise me by mail of the prospects of this matter. Hoping you enjoy good health
I remain Respectfully &cJames McDermit<Page 2>
