To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in Congress
assembled:
The petition of the subscribers residing on and adjacent to the Stage Road leading
from Key Port via Holmdel and Colt’s Neck to Squankum in the County of Monmouth and
state of New Jersey, Respectfully, sheweth:
That said Stage route connects at Key Port with the daily mail route between New York
and Freehold, the county seat of said county of Monmouth. That your petitioners have
no other convenient means of communication by mail ^than^ what is furnished by said route. That a private mail has been carried upon the same
for the last two years, greatly to the accommodation of your petitioners and of the
public. That a public mail route intersecting this one at Colts Neck has lately been
discontinued by order of the Post Master General, leaving the office at Colts Neck
as was formerly the office at Holmdel entirely dependent upon this route. That the
distances on said route are from Key Port to Holmdel 6 miles to Colts Neck 5 and to
Squankum 7 total 18 miles: And that your petitioners believe that the revenue of said
route will fully pay for the transportation of the mail:
Therefore your petitioners pray your Honorable bodies that the above mentioned road
be declared a post road, according to the intent and meaning of the Laws of the united
states establishing Post offices and Post Roads.
