Hon C. Johnson. Postmaster General United States.
The undersigned, inhabitants of the counties of Franklin and Clinton state of New
York, would respectfully petition your Honor, to establish a post route leading from
Chateaugay, in Franklin County in a Northeasterly direction, to Province line, adjoining
the north part of the town of Clinton, Clinton County, a distance of eight miles,
and to establish a post office at the termination thereof in the town of Clinton aforesaid,
to be called
Wright
post office. And we would further recommend Reuben Smith, as a suitable and trustworthy
individual to receive the appointment of postmaster thereof.
Your petitioners would further represent, that we deem it a matter of great public
convenience, that the aforesaid route and office be established for the following
reasons,— that there is a large settlement in the north part of the town of Clinton,
who have no mail conveniences being eight miles distant from any post office, that
there is a large tract of country, thickly settled, immediately below the province
line in Canada East, and adjoining the town of Clinton, who would get most of their
mail communications from this office, and would thus increase the business of the
department more than sufficient to pay the whole expense of the route and office.
Your petitioners would further represent that if your Honor has any fears that the
business of the office will not pay for all the expense of carrying the mail, &c that
the inhabitants of the north part of the town of Clinton will engage to carry the
mail once in each week over said route for the profits of the office to be established.
And your petitioners would ever pray &c.
