To The Honorable the Post Master General
The subscribers resident in the vicinity, would respectfully represent that whereas all that portion of Country situated between New Germantown and German Valley a distance of Nine miles and between Cokesbury and Pottersville a distance of Nine miles (81 square mil[es]) is entirely destitute of the facilities of mail Communication and whereas the present mail route from Somerville to New Germantown, twice a week might be extended to German Valley ^By the way of Unionville^ and thus meet and remedy the Evil, your Petitioners would respectfully pray for such Extension and they deem the present a peculiarly favorable time, to make known their wants as the present Contract for carrying the mail from Somerville to New Germantown will Expire in July next, the distance of the whole route would thus be increased from 13 to 22 miles It would be necessary to remain over night at German Valley and return next day to Somerville by 12 oclock the mail hour.
Your petitioners would state ^that^ the proposed arrangement would conduce much to the Convenience of the business Community in this location on the Immediate route are three stores one grist mill four Saw mills one extensive Tannery & bark mill and several distileries besides other establishments in the vicinity of the route and which would be benefited by the same. It would advance the Convenience of the religious Community; on the ^extended^ route are two Churches which are open weekly, where the various moral and religious publications may be circulated It would promote the circulation of news papers and of the various productions of the periodical press and thus tend strongly to the dissemination of knowledge among a people who have a growing taste for the same, we believe that the route extended as above proposed to German Valley would not be a burden to the department but that the income would meet the necessary Expenses Incurred theirby. The present Post office at New Germantown has on hand an accumulating fund we would suggest the establishment of an office on Fox Hill , and would recommend John Vescelius as Post Master.
