To the Honorable the Sennate and House of Representives, of the United States of America in Congress Assembled:
The petition of the Subscribers, citizens of the County of Lancaster, in the state
of Pennsylvania respectfully represents.
That your petitioners labor under great inconvenience from the want of facilities
of direct communication between the Gap post office and the Village of Ephrata, both
points being in the County of Lancaster aforesaid the distance is about 15 Miles through
a fertile densly populated and highly cultivated portion of the county including Merchants Mills Stoves
Forges Factories &c and embracing an amount of business that requires extensive mail
facilities your petitioners would therefore pray your honorarable bodies to Establish a new post route from the Gap post office to the Village of Ephrata
passing by the post offices of Hat, Intercourse, New Holland, and Hinkletown and your
petitioners as in duty bound will Ever pray.
