To the general Post office department Washington ^Senate & House of Representatives of the United States:^
The Petition of the undersignes inhabitants residing in Windham and its vicinity in
the County of Windham in the state of Vermont humbly sheweth and represent that a
cross mail from West Townshend North to Windham center a distance of Seven Miles is
verry much needed to accomode the public, for the following reasons, that as the mail
now runs only passes through the North part of said Windham which is taken at Grafton,
East of Windham thence West through the north part of Windham to Landonderry lying
on its West, having to pass over a mile out to the center of Windham where there is
a P. office leaving the greater part of its inhabitants, off from its rout and only
receives the Bellowes Falls mail at Grafton, and as a large Majority of the inhabitants
of Windham reside south of its center, and much or nearly all of their business is
to West Townshend, [Farneuise?], Wendsboro, East Townshend, New Fane (the County seat for said County) and Brattleborough
all Lying southwardly of Windham and as the mail now rus from West Townshend to get to Windham has to pass through East Townshend and Grafton
to Windham Center a distance of Twenty miles when if it could pass direct from West
Townshend through South Windham would be but seven Miles, & on the most travelled
road through said Town, and would accomodate south Windham which is about half way
between West Townshend and Windham center, that a post office is much needed at south
Windham to accomadate the inhabitants in its vicinity it is a small Village with a
store, a few mechanicks, with

a publick House of Worship, where one of the obleist Baptist Churches in the Woodstock
Baptist Association constant meet for the worship of God, That from sixty to a hundred
News papers and periodicals are taken by the inhabitants residing in its vicinity
which are mostely brot to said village and there distributed, with letters and other
mail matter in proportion, that from Seventy five to a hundred & twenty five families
reside within two or three miles of said village mostly farmers, their central place
of business is at said Village, and as we believe the revenue areseing from that community
to the department would defray the expenses of said rout if established we believe
they are justly intitled to its benefits,
Your Petitioners therefore Pray that a cross mail from West Townshend North to Windham
Center, 7 miles ^be established^ and that a Post office be established at South Windham Rev. Charles H. Green be
appointed Postmaster, to run twice a week at such times & hours as will best accomode
the public, and as in duty bound will ever Pray
