To the Hon. C. Johnson post Master General,Washington city.
We, whose names are hereunto subscribed, citizens of the county of Itawamba and state
of Mississippi, petition your Hon. to establish a mail route from Fulton, in Itawamba
county in the state of Miss. to Eastport, in the Tishomingo county in the state of
Miss. The mail to be carried twice a week, or once a week, as may seem proper to your
Hon. in two-horse hacks. Your petitioners would represent to your Hon, that the route
asked for, would intersect, at Fulton Miss., the main mail route from Columbus Miss.
to Tuscumbia, Ala., would cross the main mail route from Tuscumbia Ala, to Memphis
Tenn, about thirty miles from Tuscumbia, and would intersect ^at Eastport, Mi.^ the main mail route from Huntsville Ala. to Memphis Tenn, via Bolivar Tenn, Your
petitioners would further represent to your Honor, that Eastport is situated on the
Tennessee River, at the head of unobstructed navigation, and is a town of considerable
trade, and that, owing to the almost constant communication of a large portion of
our citizens with Eastport, as a point on the Tennessee River favorable to trade,
we regard the route asked for aswould be of great advantage to them. For further information we refer you to our
representative in Congress, Hon. J. Thompson. The premises considered, and our petition
granted, your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray &c.
