His Excellency the President....And, The Honorable Senators and Representatives of
Congress of the United States of North America, now in session:
Warren, Van Burran, & De Kalb Counties, Tennee
Your petitioners would most Humbly represent to your Honorable Body, that whereas
the post Master General of those united States, proposed by his advirtisemet, under
date, “may, the 10th 1847,” which appeard to us in the Nashville union and Knoxville Register, Tenn. To
Establish a mail rout By No. 5345, upon a public road leading from Spencer, Van Buren
County Tennessee, to Smithville Tenn, And Bids Were proposed by several different
persons, for the undertaking of carring the Mail to and from each respective point,
as proposed in his Adverticement: but each Bid was rejected by the Post Master General,
and therefore, there has been no Mail Rout performed by any person whatsoever, upon
said line. Your petitioners would represent to your Honorable Body, That it is most
Assensially important, that a Mail Rout should be performed on this line: and how
an Idea could be intertained, for a moment, by a Single intelligent person, that,
“It is unimportant,” or, “an un necessary Rout,” is Strainge. It is, “Passing Strange,”
that such an Idea, should be tollarated, much less cherished, to the pregadice of
a large portion of your Humble Constituents, who Equally Claim the “Rights & Privoledges,”
of the North American Republic; The Privoledges of, The United States more Sacred
to us then, “Gold or Silver,” Garanteed to us all alike, By the Precious Blood of our Ancesters, whoes cries no doubt, continually
ascend to Heven, Advocating the “Glorious Principals of American Citizens.”
<Page 2>
The Prayr of your Petitioners is, That your Honorable Boby, would amicably Interpose,
and in a most friendly remonstrate manner expostulate, with the Post Master General,
of those United States, upon the propriety, importance & nead cessaty of erecting
a Mail Rout, to be performed Twice a Week on Horse Back, from Pikeville by Spencer,
to Roadss Bridge, on Rocky River, to Isaac A. Miller’s on the Stage Road, by J. E. Rawlingss & crossing Collins river at the Flat Sholes to Smithville, ^&^ Abolish or Consolodate the Pikevill & Sparta, & also the Pikville McMinnville Routs in to the Pikvill & Smithsville Rout, & establish a Post office at
Isaac A. Millers where the Letters & Packages distaned for Sparta & McMinnville may be delivered, & be carried to either point by the Two Horse Hack. Abolish
the Rock Island Post office, & the Present Post office, kept at Woods Store, near
Rocky River, by George W. York P. Master, which are unimportant, un necessary, and
has most clearly been, detremental to the Establishment ^of^ the most Emportant & necessary office for the convenance of a large portion of the
citizens of this country: and in the end, saving the expence of performing the Carring
the mail upon Three several Routs instead of but one. This would be a considerable
retrenchment in the Expenses, &c &c.
Your petitioners would humbly show, to your Honors, That by effecting this chainge of Routs & Post office establishments, that it would
produce the gain of One Weeks time on the forwarding of every package of Letters &
Papers, distaned to or from either of the 5 points embraced in the Mail of this contemplated
Rout: From Pikville to Sparta, it would produce a gain of One Weeks time, from Spencer,
to Sparta it would make the same gain, of one Weeks time.
<Page 3>
Your petitioners would further show That owing to same very great derangement, (We
will not say, At the Post office Department, But some where,) perhaps, it may origonate
in the confused information given that department, by some Unintelligent Post Master
Clicks, & other jellious men of This country, who claim to themselves a principle,
very different indeed, to that which they put in practice: & would that their fellow
constituants should grope in the Darkness of Unintelligence, &c. &c. By some bad arraingement
the Pikeville & Sparta Mail & also the Pikville & McMinnville Mail, since August last, has “been very unregulary performed, & we now think
are wholly or measurably stoped, leaving a great portion of the Country without any
meaduan Whereby the citizens may Transport or convey their private, Commercial, &
Political Intelligence, &c
Your Petitioners would most humbly, represent to your Honrs, That it is now very important, that the Post Master General be directed to Disannull,
the Present Routs leading from Pikville to Sparta, Tennee, and from Pikville to McMinnville, and instead thereof, to establish a Rout leading from Pikville to Smithsville,
Tennee.
Thus from Pikville by Spencer 27 miles, Then to Roadss Bridge on Rocky River, (formerly Webbs old Bridge) thence to Isaac. A. Miller’s on
the Stage Road, leading from Sparta to McMinnville, and there erect a Post Office, at Isaac A. Millers, ^12 miles from Spencer,^ Thence to J. E. Rawlingss, and crossing Collins river at the Flat Sholes, Thence to Smithsville 20 miles, making
a rout in all about 59 miles.
<Page 4>
From Pikevill to McMinnville, it would make a gain of one Weeks time, from Spencer to McMinnville it would make a gain of one Weeks time, & from Smithsvill We would have
a gain of One Weeke: Thus it is clearly, important, that this chaing be effected; give us a source of
communication & intelligance.
The Prayr, of your Petitioners is, that your Honorable Body should Dirict the Post
Master General to Establish this contemplated Rout from Pikville to Smithsville, Tennee & also its necessary Post office or offices, according to the Tenner & meaning as
specifyed in this Pitition; and forth with, Advertice the Rout for the carring or
performing the Transportation of the Mail by the lowest Bider at some Early subsequent
time, so soon as practicable, &c. &c. And your Petitioners will, as in duty bound,
ever Pray &c.
