To the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled:
The undersigned, citizens ofBurlington Vermontbelieving that the exigencies of the country require the means of direct and speedy intercourse between the Atlantic and Pacific sea-boards, and that the plan of Asa Whitney, Esq., of New York, for constructing a Rail Road from Lake Michigan to the Pacific is the only feasible mode of accomplishing this undertaking, and that such a Road must vastly increase the wealth, power and greatness of this country, respectfully petition your honorable body to set apart, during the present session, the strip of land prayed for by Mr. Whitney for that purpose, and thereby enable him to commence this great National Work immediately, before the lands are so much taken up as to render it impossible.
