Memorial of the citizens of Jackson County
State of Florida
To the Honorable, the Members of the Senate and of the House of Representatives of
the United States in Congress Assembled.State of Florida
The memorial of the undersigned, citizens of Jackson County state of Florida respectfully
showeth, that the Commercial intercourse between Marianna and Apalachicola and the
adjacent Country, has much increased within the last few years, so much so, as to
render it indispensably necessary to the interest of the numerous citizens of these
respective places, that a more regular and speedy mail communication be established.
By the ^present^ route via Chattahoochee the failures and detention of the mail are frequent, and
the public labor under much inconvenience, occasioned by the Chattahoochee lagoons
and river swamp, which are impassable at certain seasons of the year, and that bring
the season of most importance to our Agricultural and commercial interest
And in order to facilitate the speed of the Mail between Marianna and the adjacent
counties with Apalachicola, Your Memorialists respectfully suggest the continuation
of Route No 5625 from Marianna to Ocheesee a distance of 30 Miles to intersect with
the Mail boat from Apalachicola to Chattahoochee.
Your memorialists further showeth that the proposed ^route,^ is not intended to interfere with the route from Marianna to Chattahoochee, but to
increase the speed of the mail between Marianna and Apalachicola and which if changed
as proposed, letters could be conveyed from Apalachicola to Marianna in 14 hours,
to Abeville in 30, to Eufaula in 34 and to Columbus [Geg?] via this route in 44 hours whereas by the present route via Chattahoochee letters
are frequently on the road from Apalachicola to Marianna 7 days, never less than 3
which for commercial purposes is a very great inconvenience
Your memorialists would further state that this route would avoid the Chattahoochee
Lagoons & river swamp on the west, and the Flint river & river swamp on the east,
and carry the Mail to Abbeville Eufaula & Columbus Ga with much greater speed than
by any other route, And it is believed by your memorialists that the immediate despatch
and direct communication caused by the extention between the Interior and its commercial Port, would soon cause a sufficient increase
of Mail matter to defray the expenses of the establishment of said route: all of which
is respectfully submitted &c
