To The Post office Department
The undersigned beg leave to represent as Citizens of St. Clair & Macomb Counties
in the State of Michigan & would hereby respectfully petition for a mail route to
be established, as hereinafter described, believing it will be for the benefit of
the Department & the Inhabitants & commercial public generally in this part of the
country. The route to commence at Mount Clemens in Macomb County thence by the John
Tucker place through the Township of Harrison to the village of “Ashley” (formerly
called “New Baltimore”) in the Township of Chesterfield in said Macomb County, thence
along near the Lake St Clair to the “Four Corners” (so called) in the Township of
Ira in St Clair County & thence to the village of Algonac in St Clair County to intersect
a mail route now terminating there. The proposed route lies long and near the Lake
and River St. Clair, and Easterly from two to sixteen miles from “Gratiot turnpike”
on which the mail is now carried from Mount Clemens to Port Huron. “Ashley” is ten
miles from Mt. Clemens & 4½ from the said Turnpike, the “Four corners” are 18 miles
from Mt. Clemens and 12 from the Turnpike, and Algonac twenty three miles from Mt.
Clemens & sixteen miles from the said Turnpike. The Inhabitants on this route are
now shut out to a great extent from Post office privileges and, as the undersigned
Petitioners think, the time has arrived in the settlement & prospects of this part
of the Country when it is desirable & for the benefit of the Department to have this
proposed route established & therefore your Petitioners will ever pray &c.
