To the Hon the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States,
5th April 1848,
The Petition of the undersigned citizens of Anderson District in the State of South
Carolina respectfully sheweth to your Honble Bodies the great inconvenience to which we are subjected in consequence of the meagre
mail facilities afforded to uswe therefore pray you to establish a new, mail route commencing at Anderson courthouse
and passing by the following offices in the order in which they are named Seneca Centreville
Steeles, Churubusco, & Millwees and back to Anderson C. H., the starting point. All
the offices above enumerated will be newly created by the establishment of the Route
except Steeles & Anderson C H, The distance from Anderson C. H. to Seneca is 8 miles
and the nearest office on any other route is Andersonville 7½ miles from Seneca to
Centreville is 6 miles from Centreville to Steeles isfivemiles, from Steeles, to Fer Churubusco isSevenmiles, and Slabtown ^is^ the nearest post office thereto at a distance offivemiles, from Churubusco to Millwees ^is^sevenis miles, and from thence to Anderson C H the starting point isSixmiles making the length of the entire route not more than39miles which can be accomplished in one day on horseback. The neighborhoods of all
these post offices is densely populated with an intelligent people and the route will
doubtless be a source of revenue rather than an expense to the post office department.
For1 further information on the subject if it should be desired reference may be had to
the Hon R. F. Simpson of the H. of R.
Your Petitioners would therefore humbly pray that
Anderson District So. Ca<Page 2>
