To the Hon Cave Johnson Postmaster Genl
The Undersigned citizens of the Towns of Macomb & Depeyster in the County of St Lawrence New York respectfully represent that the mail Route from Heuvelton P.O. in said county to Oxbow P.O. in Jefferson County was established for their accommodation. But the mail communications through the Oxbow end of the Route [amounts?] to nothing and are not benefit to [them?] or any body else, and they respectfully petition that the said Post [Route?] be changed so as to run from Heuvelton P.O. 5 miles to Depeyster P.O., 9 miles to Macomb P.O., 6 miles to Popes Mills in the Town of Macomb where they ask that a new Post office shall be established and back 10 miles to Depeyster P.O. and 5 miles to Heuvelton P.O. the place of Starting, and that the mail transportation from Macomb P.O. to Oxbow P.O. be discontinued. This will much better accommodate more people, and they respectfully request that on the 1 said new Route the mail starting from and returning to Heuvelton may be carried twice a week tuesdays and fridays. The mail carrier can perform each tripp in one day. To perform the present trip from Heuvelton to the Oxbow and back once a week takes the carrier two days or the best part of two days, and the undersigned ask that the route may be changed and a new Post Office be established at Popes Mills at any rate. If an act of congress shall be necessary to establish the Road from Macomb P.O. to Popes Mills & thence to Depeyster a Post Route then they ask that the P. M. Genl shall recommend such act and they petition Congress to pass it, and they refer to the Place of the Roads and distance hereto annexed
. . . 2 therefore ask that the above from Macomb to the OxBow be Discontinued and that the Route be established as follows viz Stuart from Heuvelton go to Depeyster and Macomb as it now Does and there leave the Present Route and go to Popes Mills in the town of Macomb a Distance of five Miles and then to Depeyster a Distance of ten miles and then to Heuvelton making a Distance of 35 miles to be performed in one Day and that a Post office be Established at Popes Mills in Macomb which is near the centre of the town and a place of considerable Business having Mills Machine Shops Stores &c ^(and the only Place in town where there is any public Business carried on)^and in the vicinity of Said mills (say within two miles) . . .
