To the Honorable Postmaster General of the United States of America
The Petition of the undersigned taxable inhabitants residing upon or near the Proposed
Mail Rout in the annexed map designated respectfully represents,
1 That it would be a great convenience to your petitioners to Establish such rout
as some of them reside at a distance varying from 4 to 10 miles from any established
Post office
2 That owing to the circuitous rout of the mail to any of the offices, of the facilities
of which your petitioners are able to avail themselves, thier newspapers and letters are frequently delayed for several days at intermediate offices.
thereby causing great vexations. and dissappointments to your petitioners in their business relations
3 That the proposed new rout opens a direct communication with the City of Albany
from which place most of the newspapers on the line of the said proposed rout are
obtained and with the different Extensive Manifactoring Establishments in the Western part of the County of Green with both of which sections
of Country most of your petitioners have large business relations.
4. That there is now no direct communication by mail with the different places on
the proposed mail rout with each other and with the city of Albany or the said Manifactoring districts
5. That many hundreds of Newspapers and letters are now annually conveyed along the
line of the said proposed rout by private individuals which were it established would
be conveyed by mail.
6 That your petitioners firmly believe that were such rout established, it would pay
its own expenses out of the revenue thereby accruing to the Post office department
and that a considerable Surplus would be left to the department after paying such
expenses.
Your petitioners would therefore respectfully pray that such rout may be established
by the post master General with Post offices at Bethlehem, New Scotland, Keefers.
[...?] ^Indians Fields^ [Newly?] and Norton Hill or at such places on said rout as may to the post master General
seem most expedient. And that the mail may be conveyed on such rout from Durham to
Albany twice in each week, and from Albany to Durham twice in each week going and
returning on alternate days and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray &c

Petition for a [rout?], mail from Albany to Durham
[ endorsement

This route here designated from Albany via Greenville to Durham has not been declared
a post route by act of Congress. It seems to be an eligible one; but the Dept cannot have the mail carried on it till declared a post road by law
