To the honorable the Senate and House of Representatives in Congress assembled.
The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of the towns of Hector, Enfield, and Newfield, in the county of Tompkins, and Catharine in the county of Chemung, state of New York, respectfully represents; That your petitioners are residents of a section of country situated at so great a distance from post offices as at present established, as to be almost entirely deprived of the benefits arising from mail communication with other portions of the union; that the inhabitants of said section are engaged in agricultural and lumbering pursuits and are rapidly increasing in numbers, entitling them in the opinion of your petitioners to ask equal participation with the inhabitants of adjacent counties in mail facilities; Your petitioners therefore respectfully pray that a mail route be established by your honorable body, from the village of Bath in the county of Steuben, to the village of Ithaca in the county of Tompkins, state of New York, passing through the villages of Monterey, in the county of Steuben, Havana and Odessa, in the County of Chemung, Cayutaville, and Centreville ^Enfield Centre^, in the county of Tompkins, and that a mail be carried on said route three times a week each way.
And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
