To the Hon: Cave JohnsonPost Master General U.S.
The undersigned petitioners would respectfully represent that a Post Rout from Fayetteville,
Washington County, Arkansas, to Maysville, in Benton County State aforesaid, would
be of great utility to the people of said counties. Said rout would pass almost directly
through the following extensive settlements, to wit: from Fayetteville to Jesse Jordon ^Daniel Neale^’s on Illinois river a distance of about 15 Miles; thence to Henry Hastings about
15 miles on the direct road; thence to Maysville about 15 Miles further:
The undersigned would further represent that large settlements are put to the inconvenience
of going to Bentonville or Maysville in Benton County or Cane Hill or Sylvia Post
Office in Washington County a distance of 12 or 15 miles.
A letter sent from Fayetteville to Maysville must first go to Bentonville, Springfield,
Mo. thence to Neosho, Mo. thence back to Maysville; or from Fayetteville to Cane Hill—Vineyard
Sylvia P.O. thence to Maysville; which cause a delay of letters between these points
distant about 45 Miles, of about 15 days.
The undersigned would state that a mail on the proposed rout could be carried at a
small expense by horse and would afford great facilities to numerous large settlements,
who are now almost entirely deprived of the benefits of communication by the mail
system:
In consideration of the premises the undersigned would respectfully ask the establishment
of a weekly horse mail between said towns of Fayetteville and Bentonville ^May[s?]ville^, with a Post Office at said Jordon’s ^Neales^ on Illinois River and Col. Henry Hastings in Benton Co about mid way between said
Jordons ^Neales^ & Maysville and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray &c.
N.B. The department can give names to the offices above asked for if they are established.S G SneedW. S. OldhamWesley H^[?]^D. B Neale[A?]. C. Lell<Page 2>
