To the Hon the Congress of the United States of America
MichiganOct 26th 1847
The petition of Citizens of the State of Michigan residing on or in the vicinity of
the Grand River Turnpike in said State respectfully shews; That the Capitol of the
said State was removed from Detroit to Lansing Eighty six Miles West of Detroit on
the said Turnpike, last winter where it is permanently located, That, there is a daily
Mail Established from Detroit to Howell on said Turnpike fifty Miles; That there is
no direct Mail Route from Howell to the Capital; That the interest of the people
require that there should be a daily mail route Established from Howell, to the Capitol
on the said Turnpike thirty six Miles. That there is a daily line of Stages on said
route which has been in successful operation since July last
Your petitioners therefore respectfully pray that [a?] daily mail route may be Established from Howell on said Turnpike to the Capital of
your petitioners & in duty bound &c

The route as explained by Hon. Mr Bingham does not pass over the road at present in operation as a mail route under the existing law. To enable the mail service to be performed which is here div[?]ed it will be necessary first to declare the road from Howell to Michigan (capital of the state) a post route by law
