To the Hon. the House of Representatives
The petition of the undersigned Citizens of Harrison Co Ohio respectfully sheweth,
That they consider the present rates of Postage unequal, unjust and opposed to those
principles of progress which govern the age. Therefore, they reccommend that an Act be passed establishing a Uniform Rate of Postage on all Mail matter transmitted through the Post Office to any place within the Union,
and embraceing the following provisions namely:
1st Two cents on each letter weighing half an ounce.
2nd One cent on each Newspaper. Periodicals in proportion.
3d The Franking privilege to be abolished without any exception whatsoever and all postages to be prepaid.
4th Nothing in the Act to prevent individuals sending letters or Newspapers at their own risk by private conveyance.
And your petitioners will ever pray.March 1848.1st Two cents on each letter weighing half an ounce.
