As “the Post Office system was designed” (strictly) “for business purposes, for the cultivation of the social & friendly feelings”, and for the promotion of general inteligence, & all useful knowledge “among the citizens of the different sections of the Union”, equally,
Therefore, the undersigned citizens of Kittery, Maine, respectfully request you to reduce ordinary Letter postage to Two cents; that the Franking power be extended to all Newspapers & other periodicals sent directly from the offices of publication, to regular subscribers; that transient newspapers, of ordinary size, be charged one cent each; & other transient mailable matter, in due proportion, & that the above named rates extend invariably, throughout the Union.
