To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives of the U.S., in Congress assembled:
The undersigned, believing the transportation of the Mail and the delivery of Letters, &c., on the first day of the week, to be a violation of the Christian Sabbath—opposed to the rights of a numerous class of citizens who conscientiously observe that day—injurious in its effects on the public morals, and unsupported by any plea of necessity or convenience, while it gives offence to the feelings of the Christian community—hereby petition your honorable body to redress the aforesaid grievance.
