To the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in congress assembled,
The undersigned citizens of the United States would respectfully represent, that it
cannot be for the honour of the government of the United States, nor do we believe
it is the wish of the people, that any thing that would operate as a restriction on
the circulation of the holy Scriptures should be imposed by the government; or that
any portion of the revenue of the United States government should be raised by a tax
on the importation of the Bible into any portion of our country; we do, therefore
respectfully petition congress to repeal so much of the existing law as imposes a
duty on the importation of the holy Scriptures, and so modify the law, that the Bible
may be imported free.” &c.
