To the post master General
Washington City
The undersigned beg leave in asking for the establishment of a post office at Mr H M C Strowd’s—Mr H M C Strowd to be post master—humbly to Represent that the position of the office
desired is decidedly the most eligible that can be selected for the convenience of
those most interested in the establishment of a post office in the neighbourhood.
It is immediately at the point of meeting of the high roads regularly travelled by your mail carried with the high road from David [Mebanes?] to Jones ferry, the Market Road to Fayettville and the most Central point to Mr Bingham’s well known School, being in view of & only a few hundred yards from the
Academy & on the Road from the boarding houses to the academee. They have the highest
respect for Mr John Morrow p.m. at Clover Garden, two miles from the location of the Contemplated
office, and would prefer the Continuance of the clover garden office, provided it
is compatible with the establishment of a new post office at Mr Strowd’sIn like manner they have no objection to the continuance the Rock Spring office Mr Thompson p.m, on the Same grounds. And as they are aware of the distance offices
in N Carolina in nearer proximity, they presume the establishment of the office desired
cannot be incompatible with the continuance of Rock Spring three miles from Mr Strowd’s in the derection of Hillsboro’ & Clover garden tow miles in nearly the opposite
direction direction
If however contrary to their hopes and belief
<Page 2>
the granting of the new office Should be judged incompatible with the continuance
of the old ones, or of either of them, then they beg leave, humbly to State, it is
their firm conviction that for ^the^ use & Conveinance of the vast majority of readers & writers & postage payers Mr Strowd’s is obviously the proper locality.
Under these circumstances they hope you will perceive the Reasonableness & justice
of granting their petition, & as in duty bound they will ever pray &c.
They will only add that the number might be easily Levelled by the Signatures of Mr Binghams Scholars, but he objects on the ground that voters only Should Sign.
