The undersigned citizens of the Counties of Racine & Walworth in the State of Wisconsin Would most respectfully represent to the Honorable Senate & House of Representatives of the United States: That an alteration of the Mail Rout between Rochester in Racine county and Spring Prairie in Walworth County so as to supply the Post Office at Martinsville would be of benefit to the public at large and to the Post office Department in particular[.] They would further represent that when the mail rout was first established between Racine in Racine county and Janesville in Rock County in consequence of the then sparse population Post offices were established in such places as the Inhabitants wished for their benefit without regard to direct travel and a weekly Horseback mail was established to supply those offices, Since then the country has become densely populated and a Horseback mail, no longer answers the purpose but is superseded by a try weekly mail carried in Post coaches and drawn by four Horses, (and in face the business of the country requires a daily mail) Your petitioners would further state that about two years since a Post office was established at Martinsville directly on the main Road between Rochester and Spring Prairie and a special mail rout was established by the Post office Department to supply the office from Rochester at an expense not to exceed sixty Dollars per annum and to be paid by the office at Martinsville provided that office collected that amount[.] The avails of the office now amount to about that sum and the business is increasing
We therefore consider that it is but an act of justice to ask for our legitimate rights and that your Honorable body direct that the mail rout be so altered as to travel on the main ^42-1^ and direct road by so doing a [saving?] of three or four miles in distance will be gained as well as the [extry?] expense of Sixty Dollars for the special Rout
We will further state that by the proposed [alteration?] the office at Burlington will not be materially affected as they are supplyed by a number of other routs two of which travel on the same rout from Rochester to Burlington
