1On December 26, 1840, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution instructing the Committee on Finance to investigate repealing part of the militia
law. In response to this resolution, Ebenezer Peck of the Committee on Finance, of which Abraham Lincoln was a member, introduced the bill in the House on January 4, 1841. On January 19,
the House referred the bill to the Committee on the Militia. The Committee on the
Militia reported back the bill on February 12 with an amendment, in which the House
concurred. The House subsequently tabled both the bill and the proposed amendment.

2 In February 1837, the House of Representatives passed, but the Senate rejected, a bill that would have in part repealed this section fifty-three. During the same session,
the Senate debated and rejected an amendment to a bill to the same effect. In February 1849, the General Assembly passed an act repealing the section.
