To the Senate and House of Representatives of the U.S. in Congress assembled:
We, the undersigned citizens of Wisconsin, residing on the route between Port Washington and Fond du Lac, respectfully pray your honorable bodies for the passage of a law establishing a mail route on the above line. The country along the route is already settled to a considerable extent, not less than four thousand persons would be accommodated with mail facilities, by the1 establishment of this route, and the population has increased and is still increasing in the ratio of 75 per cent. per ann. Port Washington is the county seat of Washington county, at which place the several public offices and records of the county are kept. There is no mail route that now reaches this section of country, and not a doubt can be entertained that it would be alike profitable to the Department and beneficial to a large population, a portion of which are now subject to the inconvenience of traveling twenty miles to a post office. A road is already worked, and considerably traveled, on this route. The terminii of the route Port Washington and Fond du Lac are on the principal routes from Milwaukee to the [northward?].
