To the Senate and House of Representatives in Congress assembled, at the City of Washington
on Monday the 6th of December A.D. 1847,
The Petition of the undersigned citizens of the County of Grant in the Territory of
Wisconsin would respectfully represent;
That under present mail arrangements a semi-weekly mail is carried from Galena in
the State of Illinois to Potosi in the County of Grant aforesaid—and that the mail
Route north stops at that place without being connected north any further; That Beetown
is a flourishing Town of about a thousand inhabitants Situated north west of Potosi
a distance of fourteen miles and that in its business relation and general communication
it is intimately connected with Potosi; That the main and most direct route from Galena
nothrth west to Prairie du Chien is through Potosi and Beetown, Said Route being twenty
miles nearer and over a road decidedly Superior to that of any other route; That under
present arrangements all mail matter from Potosi for Beetown and places north must
go to Galena first where it lays Some two or three days and has to travel a distance
of Seventy and Eighty miles (consuming in so doing a week of time) to reach places
that are only fifteen and twenty five miles distant and which might be reached in
one day—all of which operates greatly to the inconveinience and injury of your petitioners and citizens generally—depriving them of all feasible
means of business communication and almoost prohibiting the circulation of the newspaper published at Potosi in which the
people of the north western portion of the County are much interested; That a mail
Route from[...?] Potosi to Beetown connecting with the one from Galena to Potosi (which Route from
Galena to Potosi your petitioners pray may be changed to a tri-weekly route) would
contribute very materially to the benefit of your petitioners and to a large Section
of the County; That such Route would in the opinion of your petitioners more than
defray its own expenses and would secure to your petitioners and the public generally
a regular Tri-weekly Stage line from Galena to Prairie du Chien adding to the benefits
of mail communication the ordinary facilities for traveling of which your petitioners
are now entirely deprived and that too, between two of the most flourishing Towns
of Western Wisco[n?]sin.
Wherefore your petitioners ask of your Honorable Body that a tri-weekly mail Route
may be granted between Potosi and Beetown in the County of Grant and Territory of
Wisconsin,
And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray &c,
