To the Hon. Senate and House of Representatives of the United States;
We your Petitioners inhabitants of the Counties of Rock & Dane W. T. would respectfully present unto your Hon. Body: That a Territorial Road has been laid out the past season from Madison via Dunkirk, Fulton & Stones Bridge to Janesville, which is now nearly opened and which will be wholly opened and fit for the Public travel by the first of April next; That said Road is destined to be the main Thoroughfare from Janesville to Madison, The distance by Survey being only 35 miles 68 chs. & 3 lks. while the Stage Road now traveled is over 43 miles, as will more fully appear by reference to the plat of said Road hereto annexed; That the rich and populous country on the line of said Road as well as the two Flourishing villages requires that a Mail Rout should be established on said Road as soon as practicable; That a Mail Rout established on said Road would greatly accommodate a large and respectable population who are now put to great inconvenience and trouble on account of their Mail Matters; That the village of Fulton has one of the best water powers in the Territory with 12 ft. head, and now consists of one large Flouring Mill 4 Stories high in operation; one saw mill, Three Stores, one Tavern with numerous mechanic’s shops & dwelling houses, and has only one weekly Mail rout passing through it; That Dunkirk has also a first rate water power & will soon be an important place; That application has ^already^ been made for a Post Office between Madison & Dunkirk, and another between Fulton and Janesville (both very much needed) making 4 intermediate Post Offices on Said Rout.
We your Petitioners therefore pray that your Hon. Body will establish a Mail Rout on Said Territorial Road leading from Janesville via Stones Bridge, Fulton & Dunkirk to Madison with as little delay as possible.
And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray &c.
