Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring herein, That the Secretary of State be required to make out a tabular statement of the census of this State, showing the number of inhabitants, their ages, sexes, and color; also, the number of the militia, and the number of mills, machinery, manufactures, &c[etc.].
1Cyrus Edwards introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives on December 8, 1840, and the House adopted it. On December 9, Secretary of State Stephen A. Douglas sent the House census returns in response to this resolution. The House tabled this communication, returning it to Douglas on December 10. The Senate concurred with the House resolution on December 10.
