Resolved, That the Governor be requested to communicate to this House, whether he has recognized as a county the territory conditionally created into the county of Bureau by an act of the last session of the Legislature, and if so, the reasons which have induced that recognition.2
1On July 13, 1837, Thomas Atwater introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives.

2On July 14, Governor Joseph Duncan responded that he had recognized Bureau County because “a clear and decided majority of the qualified voters within the limits of the territory embracing Putnam and Bureau, voted for the establishment of the new county.” The governor also forwarded official returns from the clerk of the County Commissioners’ Court of Putnam County. The House referred the governor’s response and accompanying documents to a select committee and apparently took no further action.
