In 1833, the Illinois General Assembly made the Champaign County Circuit Court a part of the Fourth Judicial Circuit, but in 1841, moved it to the Eighth Judicial Circuit. As the Eighth Judicial Circuit was Abraham Lincoln's home circuit during most of the years he was a traveling circuit lawyer, Lincoln was frequently in Urbana to practice in the Champaign County Circuit Court.
