Chicago Herald

City: Chicago

County: Cook

State: Illinois

Isaac Cook and Charles N. Pine founded the Chicago Herald in May 1858 as a Democratic newspaper that supported the administration of President James Buchanan, in opposition to the Chicago Times, which backed Stephen A. Douglas. The paper was printed at 51 Clark Street in Chicago. Cyrus H. McCormick purchased the Herald in 1859, and after he also bought the Times in September 1860, McCormick merged the two newspapers as the Daily Times and Herald. In short order the newspaper dropped Herald from its title and reverted to the Daily Chicago Times.
