The Columbus Machine Manufacturing Company was the successor to the Eagle Foundry & Machine Shop, founded by Charles Ambos and James Lennox in 1849. Ambos and Lennox continued operating Eagle Foundry & Machine Shop until 1854, when they sold it to a consortium of businessmen who organized the Columbus Machine Manufacturing Company with a capitalization of $80,000. The company manufactured stream engines and boilers and all kinds of railroad works and machinery. Through Peter Ambos, the company's treasurer, the firm retained Abraham Lincoln as its attorney in several legal cases.
