John L. Scripps and William Bross issued the first edition of this newspaper on September 16, 1852 under the title Daily Democratic Press. They also issued a weekly edition. In 1854, Barton W. Spears joined Scripps and Bross as editor, and the firm Scripps, Bross & Spears was created. Originally a non-partisan newspaper, in 1857 it began supporting the Republican Party. In May and June of that year, it underwent minor title changes—becoming the Chicago Daily Democratic Press briefly. In July 1858, it merged with the Chicago Tribune.
