The Free West, established December 1, 1853, ran until July 19, 1855. Zebina Eastman edited and published the anti-slavery newspaper with E. Goodman and Hooper Warren as associate editors. The paper was established as an organ of the Freedom Party of Illinois, and in 1856, it merged into the Chicago Tribune.
