At the time of the 1856 election, Geneseo voters organized a Fremont Club to support the Republican candidate for president, John C. Fremont. By the election of 1858, the town’s Republicans organized as the Geneseo Republican Club, with James M. Hosford as president. A Geneseo Republican Club was also active during the election campaign of 1860, alongside a local organization of Wide Awakes. Geneseo still had a Republican Club as late as 1868.
