Phineas M. Kent founded the Louisville Daily Democrat in 1843 as an organ for the Democratic Party in Kentucky during the lead-up to the 1844 Federal Election. In 1844, John H. Harney purchased the paper. By 1852, Harney operated the paper in partnership with William E. Hughes under the publishing firm Harney & Hughes. By 1855, the publishers renamed the paper the Daily Louisville Democrat. The paper reverted to its original title by 1863. Throughout his time with the Democrat, Harney maintained an editorial rivalry with his personal friend George D. Prentice of the Louisville Journal.
