Asahel Gridley founded the McLean County Bank in March 1853 in partnership with J. Young Scammon and J. Burch. The Illinois General Assembly granted it a charter for twenty-five years. By 1855, Gridley had bought out his partners and owned all of the bank's stock. The bank received roughly $200,000 in deposits in its first five years and remained in business until after the Civil War.
