Upon Moultrie County's creation in 1843, the Illinois General Assembly placed it in the Eighth Judicial Circuit. It remained in the Eighth Judicial Circuit until 1853, when the General Assembly placed Moultrie County in the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit. It remained in the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit until well after the Civil War.
