Established in the 1830s on Market Street in Saint Louis, Missouri, first under the name Standford & Davis, then Davis, Tilden & Richards, the firm became Samuel C. Davis & Company in 1850 when Samuel C. Davis, Henry T. Tomlinson, Matthew Moody, and Nathan W. Perkins partnered. From 1850 onward, the firm operated an extensive and successful dry goods wholesale business in four stores on Main Street in Saint Louis. It remained successful through the Civil War.
