Formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1840 by an act sponsored by Abraham Lincoln, the Springfield Mechanics Union existed "for the purpose of improvement in Literature, Science and the Arts, and for the mutual assistance of members and their families, in cases of sickness, accidental disability of body, or death."
