Alexander moved with his parents from his native state to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1828, settling three miles east of Auburn. In 1829, he moved to what became Chatham Township south of Lick Creek. In 1834, he married Catharine Darneile (Darneille), a union that produced fourteen children. David took up farming on the family farm six miles southwest of Chatham. In 1850, he owned real estate valued at $1,500. By 1860, he owned real estate valued at $10,000 and had a personal estate of $2,800.
