In 1836, Allen moved with his parents and siblings to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he became a farmer. In 1849, he married Louisa Watts, with whom he had four children. Louisa died in 1857, and Allen remarried to Catherine Vaughn, with whom he had six children. In 1850, Allen owned $1,000 worth of real estate.
