By 1820, Armstrong settled in a portion of Sangamon County, Illinois, that later became part of Menard County. He married Catharine Miller on December 26, 1822. In 1840, was the head of an eleven-person household in Menard County. After the death of his first wife, he married Lucy Ann Brown on January 2, 1843 in Menard County. In 1850, he was a farmer in Menard County, and he owned $2,000 in real property.
