Armstrong lived with his brother William in Menard County for a time and served as one of the county's earliest justices of the peace. During the Black Hawk War, he served in the 4th Illinois Regiment of Mounted Volunteers, with Abraham Lincoln. By 1850, he was working as a farmer with his wife Delilah and their seven children and had accumulated over $2,000 in real estate.
