Ashe served as a captain and was later promoted to major during the French and Indian War. A longtime member of the North Carolina Assembly, Ashe was one of the leaders of the faction that opposed the royal governor of the colony and the taxes imposed upon them by the British government. With the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Ashe was active in raising militia troops in North Carolina, and in 1778 he was commissioned a major general of the Continental Army.
