A merchant and tanner by trade, Barret served as clerk of the Edmonson County court and circuit court for thirty years. In 1852, he moved to Missouri, where he farmed until his death. Barret married three times. His first wife was Mary M. Marshall, whom he married in 1824 and with whom he had three children. After Mary Barret's death, Augustus married Mary J. Cunningham, who also bore him three children. In 1837, he married Bereroyal H. Rowntree, with whom he had three children.
