Brown married Harriet L. Allen in Kentucky on December 31, 1822, and together they had six children. They moved to Sangamon County in 1833, and Harriet died two years later. Brown remarried to Laura Buckman in 1837, and together they had four children. In Kentucky, Brown had been engaged as a merchant, upon his move to Illinois he engaged in land speculation, helping to found or lay out towns throughout Illinois and Iowa. Brown was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
