Morris (Maurice) B. Brown was a physician, Whig, and, later, a Republican. In June 1849, he married Sarah Ann May, with whom he eventually had at least five children. In 1850, he lived in Carmi, Illinois, where he worked as a physician, and owned $600 in real estate. He was politically active locally, but not especially successful. In 1852, the Whigs of White County, Illinois, appointed him their secretary. In the local elections of 1858, he ran as a Republican for a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives but lost to his Democratic opponent. By 1860, he owned $10,000 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property.
